This is my last update for the first tilde30.
What have I accomplished?
- I used it as an excuse to revive this, my blog.
- I have created a layered SVG map of my property.
- This includes a system for scaling the property to the document based on various Inkscape document grids along with the snap-to-grid to align design elements.
- I spent probably a combined 8 hours through the month pulling and burning weeds.
- I contacted several contractors:
- plumbers
- Actually paid one to replace the super leaky hose bib at the front of my house.
- Learned that plumbers don't do sprinkler/irrigation systems so I still need to contact one of those companies.
- a general contractor
- it's been over a week and he still hasn't got back to me with the estimates i requested.

- masonry work on the walls in my back yard
- concrete demolition
- carport installation
- carport installation company
- This one is kind of a scam.
- They basically do the bare minimum when it comes to installation and charge extra if they have to cut any metal (ie to account for a sloping driveway) and they don't do any of the relevant concrete work necessary to meet code (even though they claim to install code-compliant carports).
- ...but their carport design might actually be worth the exhorbitant base price
- This one is kind of a scam.
- plumbers
- I spent a lot of time learning about xeriscape water conservation principles
- I have been learning about various native or drought-friendly plants that might be suitable for my yard.
Take-aways:
- I still dislike 95% of contractors. They tend to be unreliable (eg, never get back to me with estimates)
